The Importance of “Tummy Time” for Infants

Question: My baby becomes very fussy during tummy time. My doctor has told me that tummy time is important for her, but what can I do to make it more tolerable for her?
Answer: You and your doctor are absolutely correct about tummy time being important for your baby’s overall development! When your baby is in this position, she is strengthening and learning to control her head, shoulders, abdomen - every muscle group all the way down to her feet. It prepares her for learning crucial skills later, such as rollling over, sitting, crawling, and eventually walking. Here are some ideas to make it more comfortable and fun for her!
1. Try having her lie in this position only a few minutes a day, several times everyday to build up her tolerance.
2. Place a rolled towel or blanket under her shoulders and arms to make it easier to lift her head.
3. Use plastic mirrors and moving/colorful toys to sustain her attention when in this position. You can hold toys just above her eye level to entice her to lift her head and keep it up.
4. Lie next to or in front of her on your tummy to gain her attention and interest.
5. While you lie down, have her lie on your chest so she can look up at you.
